What is Rotavirus and Rotavirus Vaccine

Rotavirus is a disease that makes thousands of babies and young children sick every year. Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhea in children and newborns worldwide. According to the WHO(World Health Organization) estimates, about 215,000 deaths were caused due to rotavirus disease in 2013 (the last year for which data is available). Most deaths occur in developing countries.

What is rotavirus?

  • 2 months for the first dose
  • 4 months for the second dose

  • Have had intussusception (a kind of blockage in the intestine)

What are the side effects of the rotavirus vaccine?

Most babies who get the rotavirus vaccine have no side effects. If there is any side effect, they are usually mild and they disappear in a few days.
